The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 price is KES 73,000 at Smartphones Planet Kenya. Released in 2023 and still widely regarded as one of the best vlogging cameras available anywhere in the world, the Osmo Pocket 3 built the template that the Pocket 4 later refined. It features the same 1-inch CMOS sensor, the same 3-axis motorized gimbal with ±0.005° stabilization precision, 4K/120fps slow motion, a D-Log-M color profile, and three built-in directional microphones, all in a device weighing just 179 grams.

The Pocket 3 remains an outstanding camera for Kenyan content creators, travel vloggers, event videographers, and business owners who want professional-quality stabilized footage without the complexity of a mirrorless camera setup. And at this price, it represents exceptional value, particularly now that its successor, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, has launched.

Design & Build (The Original That Set the Standard):

The Osmo Pocket 3 measures 139.7 x 42.2 x 33.5 mm and weighs 179 grams, marginally smaller and lighter than the Pocket 4. The pen-shaped cylindrical grip with the 3-axis gimbal head at the top is DJI's proven form factor, discreet enough to film in public without drawing attention, and pocketable in a coat or bag. Build quality is typical of DJI, premium plastics and metal construction that feels built for professional use.

The 2-inch rotatable touchscreen (556 x 314 px, 700 nits) is the same size as the Pocket 4's but 300 nits dimmer. In very bright direct sunlight, such as an outdoor event in Nairobi, the Pocket 3's screen can be harder to read than the Pocket 4's 1000-nit display. The DJI Mimo app on your phone can serve as a larger, brighter monitor when needed.

The Gimbal (Identical to the Pocket 4):

The 3-axis motorized gimbal is the Pocket 3's defining feature, and it is mechanically identical to the Pocket 4:

  • Pan: -235° to 58° (mechanical: -240° to 63°)
  • Tilt: -120° to 70° (mechanical: -180° to 98°)
  • Roll: -45° to 45°
  • Angular vibration range: ±0.005° — same precision as Pocket 4
  • Max controllable speed: 180°/s

The gimbal's wide pan range enables direct-to-camera selfie/vlog mode and forward-facing scene recording without moving the device. This physical stabilization, not electronic image cropping, is what separates pocket gimbals from action cameras and phones, and the Pocket 3's gimbal performs it just as well as the Pocket 4.

Camera & Image Quality:

The Pocket 3 uses a 1-inch CMOS sensor with a fixed 20 mm equivalent f/2.0 lens, the same optical configuration as the Pocket 4. The key difference is in processing and capability: the Pocket 3 delivers 12 stops of dynamic range, and its ISO ceiling is lower at 6400 standard and 16000 in low-light mode.

In practical terms for typical Kenyan outdoor shooting conditions, well-lit streets, parks, beaches, events, and safari environments, the Pocket 3 and Pocket 4 produce near-identical results. The difference in dynamic range and low-light performance becomes most noticeable in challenging indoor environments, at night, or in high-contrast outdoor scenes where the sky is very bright and shadows are deep.

The D-Log-M color profile provides a flat, low-contrast log format for flexible color grading in post-production — giving the Pocket 3 genuine professional video capability for creators who edit their footage. It does not support the full D-Log Pro (10-bit) available on the Pocket 4, which offers a wider color gamut for more intensive color work.

Video Modes:

  • Normal video: 4K@24/25/30/48/50/60fps (16:9, 1:1, 9:16 vertical) and 2.7K, 1080p at the same frame rates
  • Slow motion: 4K@120fps, 2.7K@120fps, 1080p@120/240fps
  • Hyperlapse: 4K/2.7K/1080p with Auto to 30x speed
  • Timelapse: 4K/2.7K/1080p, 0.5s to 60s intervals, up to unlimited duration
  • Motionlapse: Four programmable positions
  • Low-Light video: 4K@24/25/30fps
  • Max video bitrate: 130 Mbps

Audio (Three Directional Microphones):

The Pocket 3 has three built-in microphones with directional audio control — the same configuration as the Pocket 4. You can prioritize sound from the front (for vlogging) or rear or use all three for ambient/spatial audio. For professional audio, the Pocket 3 is compatible with the DJI Mic 3 and DJI Mic Mini via the 3.5mm/USB-C adapter on the handle accessory (DJI Mic 3 is only fully supported on the Pocket 4). The audio quality from the built-in microphones is excellent for a pocket camera — reviewers consistently rate it as better than what you'd get from a smartphone for vlogging in open environments.

Battery & Charging:

The 1300mAh battery delivers up to 166 minutes (2 hours 46 minutes) of recording at 1080p/24fps with the screen off, solid but noticeably shorter than the Pocket 4's 240 minutes. In real-world 4K use with the screen on, expect 60–90 minutes of continuous recording before needing a charge or battery swap. For extended shoots, the DJI Battery Handle (sold separately) significantly extends runtime.

Charging is fast: 16 minutes to 80% and 32 minutes to full.
